Why would there be a discrepancy

Pulled my husband's report and found a collection item that I knew was not his from BellSouth Telecommunications for the amount of $278.

The item was listed like this.

Collector: BellSouth Telec
Account Number:
Ownership: Individual
Date Open: 07-2002
Balance Date: $278
Date of Status: 09-2002
Status: Unpaid

That is. BellSouth is not listed in the creditors section that has the address and there is no collection agency listed.

Now when I read this account the way it is written, it looked like the account had been opened July 2002, and defaulted September 2002. That is how I interpreted the findings and since I knew that I had not been using BellSouth at all during that time period and that I live in an area where there is no BellSouth service providor available, I knew it was not his account.

So I called BellSouths national corporate call number and told them the situation. They transferred me in house to the collection department. I spoke with the inhouse collection person and I get a completely different story. This story is that the dates of service were August 1998- Nov 2000 in Tennessee. I knew it was not us becuase during that time we were in Texas and then in Hawaii. She then reported that the account had been turned over to a collection agency by the name of Credit Bureau Services Collections (CBSC).

So I have several questions.

Why is it that the account opened date is so much different in the OC file than in the credit report file?

Secondly, we need to dispute this item and how do we do that. What kind of information do we need to prove to them that there is no way that we could have used this service in TN when they said we did.

Third, how do we know which dates to dispute. The dates that the OC had given to me on the phone or the dates that are reflected in the credit report on the official record. Both sets, we can prove beyond a doubt that we were not in the service area and had no knowlege of the account.

Thanks in advance.

Drew
