please help summons questions

I received a summons from golden, wexler and sarnese pc. in new york on 9/28/03 from a ca dated 8/21/03 which said i had 20 days to respond. do i still have the option to send a validation letter. it is pass the 20 days what will happen now? any advice is helpful. they also sent me a settlement letter on 9/12/03. after being summons can u still settle?
