For the record for anyone who happens along this thread.

Collection agencies cannot put you in jail and they cannot threaten you with jail. As stated previously this is indeed an FDCPA violation.

However...courts can. If you receive court papers, PAY ATTENTION. Call the court to get your facts straight and confirm your appointment.

Above all...if you don't want the collection agency getting a piece of the pie...pay your bills. If you can't then do your best to come up with an arrangment and avoid collections. If you obtain goods or services then you do so knowing you will owe and it is YOUR responsibility to follow up and see that the bill is paid. Save receipts and get proof of PIF. This is still not a guarantee that you won't owe more (Medical example: Insurance companies often take back payment at a later date causing you to owe long after you thought the bill was settled).

Document all transactions and conversations related to the bill.

The FDCPA significantly improved the treatment of the consumer, but the CA's hands aren't completely tied and they can still make life legally miserable.
