Go to WhyChats website (links listed under Newcomers, etc)..start reading there for bankruptcy exemptions.

Bankruptcy stops everything - so if you are only considering based on the possibity of a lawsuit you can wait.

Local library will have copies of do it yourself bankruptcy books- nolo is good- that you can read to find out what is exempt and so on for your state.
