Sears Attorney -- Do we have a Case?

In 1996/1997 my husband and I went through a financial crisis and Sears was one of the accounts that went into arrears. They turned the account over to an attorney who filed a lawsuit in May, 2000 but we were able to pay off the account and the suit was dropped.
Since then, Sears continues to list this account as a charge-off with an outstanding balance. We have sent a copy of the attorney's letter, sayng this debt was paid in full, to the CRA's multiple times but it keeps coming back as a confirmed debt.
We finally contacted the attorney to complain and his response was to say he has "no duty to correct or modify any information" and that we should "attempt to contact Sears" ourselves.
We have since bought a house but, of course, are paying a higher interest rate, in part because of this. I would love to sue these people! Do we have a case?
Thanks in advance for your help...this is a great site!
