Credit card

We have alway's been good about paying are bill's put ran into some hard times over the summer and didn't make the credit card payment, they have sent us a pay off offer and now they have turned it into collection.
What should we do try to make an offer or just let it get charged off is are credit already bad because of it is their any way of fixing this mess??
