The next time they call, directly and clearly instruct them to immediately stop calling your workplace. Get their mailing address, and send them a letter stating that, as per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, you want them to cease their demand calls and messages. You may also want to send them a letter stating that you dispute the validity of the debt (e.g. it isn't yours, etc), and requesting that they provide some kind of documentation. Tell them very clearly that you know that they will be in violation of the FDCPA if they persist, and that you will file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Also contact the credit bureau(s) that list the deceptive date, and dispute the item. If you don't believe that the debt is legitimate in the first place, then say that. Otherwise, you may wish to just dispute the date. If possible, include documentation to get the bureau's attention. Also ask them to provide the name and address of anyone who returns a confirmation claiming that the item is correct (in case that happens.) Check out our *Credit Problems* section (link is at left) and read the Collection Agency FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for general advice on dealing with third-party collection agencies. There is also a link there to the full text of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Our *Credit Overview* section has information on obtaining your credit reports from all three credit bureaus (in case you don't have them all.) Good Luck.
