How to settle?

DH has 2 collection accounts (2001, 2002) and we have been receiving calls, letters, etc.... we have not responded. They are not for a great deal of money ($1,500 total) and I have heard of people settling for deletion. How do I go about doing this? I know this should be done in writing but I'm not sure how to word it. Thanks in advance!!!

P.S. We reside in PA
