They handle overdue tax collection for the State of New Jersey. The big OSI move is to send a letter (the "heart attack letter") stating you owe some incredible amount of money (an "estimated" bill for tax + interest + penalties). Once they have your attention, they tell you to have the state "recalculate" the bill for the true amount. An associate of mine got a letter DEMANDING $60K for a small business tax dispute. After her accountant spoke with the NJ Treasury, they determined that the real bill was in the area of 4K. But it took some time for the victim to pay off the 4K, which she paid directly to the state. Now, because no funds were paid to OSI during this time OSI kept demanding the full $60K because according to them, you are required by law to settle with them and then request a refund from the state! After about 6 months she paid off the state and got them to call off OSI. Throughout this whole ordeal OSI constantly threatened to place leins on the business and to give evidence of state tax deficiencies to the IRS, implicitly threatening her with IRS investigation. This whole mess was due to an honest oversight by the accountant. I was told by a tax attorney that OSI is notorious for this move, and that "they pull numbers out of the hat - they usually ask for 50,000+ in a small case, and usually the bill is about ten times what is really owed".

Admittedly, some of the blame for these practices lies with the State of NJ. But what kind of ethical company would condone these practices? How many people have been put in the hospital or in the ground because of heart attacks these people have caused?

Bastards.
