Help with collection charges?

I have finally made my last payment on a collection account. I wrote "paid in full" in the memo line of the last check. Now, I received a letter saying that
I owe over $700 for their collection expenses. The whole amount I owed was only $1200. That's over 50%
charge! Can they actually make me pay this?
