Court summons for medical bill

Could someone PLEASE help me. I did not get a responce yesterday. I received a summons yesterday where a local clinic is suing me for a 2 year old bill that I thought my ex husband had paid (there was a verbal agreement between us that he would pay that) Do you think that I will be responsible for this. I am barely making ends meet on a tight budget. Should I respond or should I just show up in court? We live in Kansas. Stupidly I did not have this put in writing in the divorce papers.
