Immediately file an answer with the court and a copy to the Plaintiff's attorney. If you do not have an attorney representing you, go see the clerk at the court listed on the summons. Some have forms you can fill out whereby you enter your answer.

For starters you can just enter a general denial and include a demand for validation of the debt. Request that they provide you with copies of all statements on the account for the amount you owe.

As to the 20 day period, the date on the summons by the attorney signature is not important. The only date that matters is the date on which you received the summons. The 20 days start ticking from then. If you were served on 9/28 then your answer is due on 10/18 so you have a week to file the answer.
