received summons..have questions

I live in SC. My husband received a summons from an attorney in NC representing citibank. The balance on the card is just over $2000. There is no court day as far as i can tell. It says i am required to answer the complaint..which im gonna do. Do i need to ask them to validate this or not? The last reported activity was on 02/01. The sol is 3 yrs, which will run out in about 4 months. Lastly can they still sue after sol is out since he recevied this summons now?
