How do I trace this down?

I received an approved credit card in the mail from one of the major card companies. This was the actual plastic card with a $2000 credit line. I called the company and they said the application was submitted online. But, I never applied for credit with this company, online or by mail.

Well, it was a nice gesture, whoever applied for the card for me, but I don't want it. And I don't want this to happen to me again.

Is there a way for the creditor to trace down where that application came from, even though it was done online. Or, do I have to hire a private investigator? I mean, if that's the case, I'll spend the $29.95 for something like NetDetective and do the work myself.
