I received the following letter this month from the Northland Group Inc.

“Dear Stopped Paying,

We are concerned that we have not heard from you regarding the above referenced delinquent account. Despite many opportunities to resolve this matter, the account remains unpaid. Our intent is to work with you and resolve this problem. By simply making payments of $50 per month, with the first payment by 11/01/03 and continuing with subsequent monthly payments of $50 until the balance is paid, you can successfully pay off this account. Coupons are attached for your first three payments. Upon completion of the payment plan, we will issue a letter confirming that the account is paid and that you have no further obligation on the account. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Imagine the relief you will feel after taking the first step to resolve this matter. Call your representative today at the toll free number below, and take advantage of the exciting offer.”

I haven’t paid on this account in over two years. I’ve never spoken to any collector ever on the phone (caller id, privacy guard, never return their messages) The balance is over 25k (credit card) A $50 a month payment on a 25k account would take nearly 42 years to pay off. So what nasty surprise would they have in store if someone were to innocently (foolishly?) take them up on this “exciting” offer?
