Summon answer - please help

I answered a summon today the court clerk said I don't have proof of service. I said I'll deliver the answer copy to the citibank's attorney by myself but the court clerk said I cannot deliver by myself. Who else can deliver for me beside an attorney? I will not let my friends or relatives deliver because I am ashame.
Please help... I live in CA. I answered the summon with lack of knowledge.
