You got scammed. They cannot file criminal charges against you and the check is well past the statute of limitations. Personally I would stop payment on the check. What they will now do is send you another bill for some made up legal fees and you will get hit with another 1k plus bill. What state are you in? You need an attorney and you need to strike them first. They are scum.
