need help with question on law firm collectors.......please!

hubby has a judgement on him for a wells fargo account being collected by a law firm collector.......the original amount was 5900..it was 5700 when charged off and they added fees and interest.....they the law firm says it cant be settled for less than 4400....is this a good settlement.....the account only just charged off in january of this year. they refuse to negotiate anything lower. I know we owe the account but it makes me mad because when i got behind they raised the interest rate and kept tacking on over limit and late fees which cause the account to go up so high and i couldnt get it under control and they wouldnt work with me. we are in massachusetts.
