They cannot 'legally' make you pay the rest, however there's nothing to stop them from calling you years later and bugging you about it.

They bank on the idea that most people don't know the laws about things like this. Most people are most likely intimidated into paying debts that they're not legally obligated to pay.

Sad, but true.
