Disclaimer: Personal experience an opinions only, YMMV.

They told me the same stuff...only the balance was $13K+. Plenty of threats, but no lawsuit. We did payments for a while, then a 55% settlement. The 200 a month you offered is more than the amount the court would make you pay under a slow pay motion,(at least in TN) and they know that. They want to scare you. Then again, since you are so "handy", right there in the city, they may do it. If they do, big f-ing deal. A judgment is not a death sentence, merely an annoyance, especially one for $1000. Likely your credit is already trashed, so what's the damage?

------
Don't call them. Let them call you. Do not act scared or intimidated when they call. Try to save up $350 or so, and when they call, tell them you are a bk looking for a place to happen, and that you have $350 to your name, and you will offer that to settle the account. If they go for it, get it on paper. The older the account gets, the more agreeable they will be.
