unsecured credit card

My father recently passed away and being the oldest child I assumed the responsibility of letting his creditors know. However, it seems to have backfired as some are saying since I took the responsibility to notify them I also assumed responsibility for the debt. He was the sole cardholder and not married and some of his balances are rather large. I am being harrassed like they were my debts. Can anyone help me or tell me what to do? Thanks
