They are written because even though you applied orally over the phone, there was a written agreement. Someone inserted the terms in a written contract. I then assume that later the application was mailed to you and you were required to sign it before they sent your credit card or the terms may have spelled out that the contract was ratified when you used the credit card.

Oral contracts have nothing in writing. If it is a credit card you applied for, it is an open ended account which is also different from a written contract in that there are not a set of definite time period and payment terms.
