Please bear with me as I coulnd't find an exact answer to my question. my situation is: i incured a 15,000 medical bill in Mar 1996, at the time, i have no insurance. The hospital billed me in small amounts a few times (in amounts between 100 to 250 dollars). but they stopped before the full amount was collected. I did not pay attention, and after graduation in 97, i moved. since then, i guess i have received some phone calls about it, but never connected the dots. This item never showed up on my credit report and i was able to get two mortgages. recently, a collection agent called me and threaten to sue. can someone tell me 1. since it never showed up on my credit report, how do i calculate the sol? and what is the sol for medical bill in new york? 2. what can they do to me? wage garnishment? do i need to care? I just want to make sure that this is taken care of, that i am not guilty for doing nothing (which happened to my student loan, they couldn't locate me and i was liable for the finance charges). thank you very much.
