I'm in Florida and have about $20,000 in SOL debt (over 10 years old). I opened a FCNB account with Newport News (Spiegel) back in 11/99 - stopped paying in 7/01 due to financial problems. They have charged off the debt and now Midland Credit Management has stepped up to bat. I receive the usual monthly "threat" letters and just file them away. But today I answered the phone rather than letting the machine get it. Guess who? I was real flustered and surprised (expecting Hubby to call) and when she asked for my name, I said this is me. She then blathered on about the debt and I interrupted her and said "Please mail a verification of debt to my home address - thank you" and hung up. Needless to say, she called right back and spoke to the machine. Did I do a bad thing? I owe them $3669 and they are offering me monthly settlements of about 1/2 that. I never respond. Now that I answered the phone, did I open up a can of Whoop-As*? There is no way in the world that I can pay them a dime. Hubby is the only one working, we have 2 kids, live in an apartment and drive an old (89) car - living from paycheck to paycheck and have about $150 in the bank.

Please tell me I have nothing to worry about.

Thanks for any and all responses!
