Some good news

I’ve been reading this site for a few months now, and I just wanted to share some good news. There is hope out there. I recently settled nearly $40,000 in credit card debt. It took several years but I can finally say I’m debt free.

Over three years ago I came home to a crying wife who had just gotten off the phone w/ a consumer credit counselor, who told her our only option was to find a lawyer fast. We didn’t want to declare bankruptcy but the realization had finally hit that we may never get out of debt unless we did so. We entered a debt reduction program, that she had contacted months before, ironically they responded back that very same day. I firmly believe it was divine intervention. Feeling as though we had no choice, or hope we entered their program. Last week we made our final payment.

I pulled my credit report a little over a month ago and it showed several zero balances. However it showed one as still being approx. $2600, which was half the settle amount. It also showed I had a collection for something that I know wasn’t mine. I disputed both and just the other day I found out that both had been deleted from my report.

I had seriously considered contacting a credit repairer. But it didn’t take long to realize that much of what can be done, you can do yourself. I’m in the process of obtaining my CR from each agency in order to focus my attention on each dispute. I realize that my credit won’t be in good standing for some time …several charge-offs will stay on my report for years. I view these as sort of a scarlet letter.

I also wanted to say that there is a wealth of information on this site. A very big thank you to the individuals who maintain it. The situation that many of you are in is not as bleak as it may seem. I know I’ve been there. There is hope. My hope came in two ways, over time and with faith.
