Unless you promised to pay in WRITING, there is no legal obligation for you to pay.

Under the statute of frauds, any promise to pay the debt of another must be in writing.

In addition, if he was under 18, the contract would not be valid NOR would you be obliged to pay. Contracts with minors are void or voidable as they lack contractual capacity ( under legal age).
