wrong person

received a letter from jbc and associates regarding a bad check written in 1993. ive never heard of the store it was written to and have never had a checking account at the bank it was written on. i called jbc and told them they had the wrong person and was told id have to clear it up, they didnt do any investigative work. also told me id either clear it up or be standing in front of a judge. went to the bank and the manager verified that i have never had a checking account with their bank. she called jbc while i was there and told them they had the wrong person and asked for a copy of the check. she was told the request would be forwarded. nothing received yet. do i need a lawyer or what? dont they have a responsibility to make sure they have the right person? thanks for any advice
