Welcome to the 'new predatory capitalism'. JBC is behaving according to custom, their custom being criminal patterns of conduct. You owe these scumbags nothing. Pay them accordingly.
They made illegal demands of you, stupidly adding illegal threats to have you standing in front of the court, all violations of law.
Call the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, DC - number available through this site - and start a complaint against them. Do the same with the Attorney General of your state. And please do as Observer so sagely counsels and sue these small putrescent insects.
The modern day 'collection professional' is a criminal operating under color of law. To mug you would require courage, stealth, force, tact, none of these qualities are to be found in 'collections professionals'. Instead they send illegal letters making illegal demands and follow up with meaningless yet no less illegal statements over the telephone. Treat them as criminals, make their lives interesting by getting as much government heat and class action litigation after them as you can. It's all they understand. They'll bully others but by fighting back with vigorous certainty they'll leave you alone.
This board of late has been reporting greater indidence of criminal prosecution and civil action taken against these cowardly dimwit bullies. Even if you wrote a bad check it's long past statute. Never, ever, not no how pay one cent to any of these thugs for many good reasons, all of which are discussed on this board.
JBC is an acronym which stands for: JerkXXXs, Bullies, Cretins. A bit defamatory to the three aforementioned groups but what can one do? We are after all trying to politely describe 'collections professionals'.

Professionally,

Keyser Soze
