First, make sure that the information is correct. Here is the link to the National Student Loan Data System:

www.nsids.ed.gov or Call 800-433-3243.

Note this is Federal information- so it will be accurate.

Always assess the situation before proceeding.
Do not assume anything you are told is true or
accurate.

The person on the other end of the phone (NCO) has only one goal - to make money on you. They don't care if is your debt or not. You could pay them and still owe the government.

If you have defaulted, there are options through the federal government for rehabilitation and loan consolidation. One of the options for repayment is income based so you can pay them and still have money to live.
