Good advice from Tazi. Assess your situation by reviewing your records on the National Stident Loan Data System [ the link above ]. If you have called the Dept. of Ed. you probably do have a good sense of your situation.

Having a student loan go into the hands of a CA is not a pretty thing. They are allowed to add a fee of up to 25% to the balance the DoE is asking them to collect AND they are allowed to pay themselves first! This is why CAs like NCO want the big payment upfront before they'll let you make more reasonable payments.

You do have some options - Loan Rehabilitation and Loan Consolidation. The Federal Student Aid site [ a DoE site ] has some good info for addressing your situation:
