is there a certain time frame you can ask for validation

it is ever too late to ask for valiadation, been paying a ca law firm and been reading this website and have learned so much from it, i got scared when the law office sent me a letter from my own state so I thought they were going to sue me ,, so I started making payments to them the sol will be up in 4/2004
so what I am wanting to know, is can I ask for validation of this account, the ca is the second one and they reported it to my cr besides the oc, the law office on my cancelled checks it say's collection agency for payee so can any one tell me what that means am I going to get sued before my sol is up or are they just scaring me, been making payment due before the 5 of each month and last month they didnt send me a statement I just don't understand what is up with the ca and law firm any help is greatly appericated thanks so much \
