Mother is being sued by first retailers bank (mervyn's)

My mother recieved a summons today that she has 30 fays to respond to the suit. She wants to avoid going to court. She can make payments. They want $1900.00 + 10% per annum. She is employed at Mervyn's. Is there any type of respons she could give them? She is 70 years old, and I want to help her out.
