I received verification, now what?

This is in regards to a $3734.51 debt owed to FCNB/Newport News (bought by Midland Credit). Account was opened 11/99 and date of last activity was 8/01. They have been sending me "offers" to pay only 1/2 of the debt - I never respond. But then I accidently answered the phone when they called and flustered, I asked them to send verification and then hung up. Well, I got the verification - They sent the Assignment and Bill of Sale from FCNB to MRS Receivables Corporation dated 11/26/02 along with a letter demanding full payment. Now I don't know what to do. We are still well within the SOL and believe me, if I could pay it, I would. I don't work, I homeschool our 2 children - Hubby is the only one working. We have absolutely no assets they can get (our car isn't worth crap) and no home (apartment living). We are barely scraping by right now just paying our normal bills, rent and food. There is no way I could even afford to send them $5 per month. Do I write them a letter explaining our situation or do I sit back, do nothing, and possibly be sued?

HELP!
