Old Debt 1991

I have recently been receiving calls from collection agencies for old debt that was written off in 1991 by the creditors. They are telling me that they are going to file suit since I am in the position to pay now per them. THey said they have pulled a credit report and now I can pay. THey also said they were going to put that negative information back on my credit file since I refuse to pay. I asked them that if they can send me validated information that the credit is mine, we would discuss it otherwise don't bother me. THis is old debt from me and my exwife. Can they file suit and put it back on my credit file?
