Can't pay my car what can I do?

I have run into some fincial troubles and am not bale to pay my car note. I have excellent credit (until now i guess). I caled the bank and was told that they will send me a volentary repo form and I can give the car back volentary. They said however whatever they get for it at auction, will then be taken away from the loan total and then I am responsible for the rest. My question is if I can't pay it and I am ruining my credit why do I have to pay the differance also? Any suggestions?
