I was mistaken in that the collection agency last contacted me in March 2002 (as opposed to 2003), although the payment that I forwarded to Providian was sent in 2003.

Now, for a follow-up question:

Do creditors tend to make one final "last ditch" attempt to collect money before proceeding with litigation? Or is it likely that I'll receive a Summons one day out of the blue?
