In California you have 6 months - most of the time. Regardless of how much time the law allows, courts are less and less likely to grant your motion the longer you wait to file it.

Go to the law library and ask for the Civil Practice Guides for your state. Look in the index for "setting aside a default judgment". I assume this is a default judgment as you cannot set aside a judgment on the merits of the case. If your case has been decided - NOT a default - that's a different story.
