NYSHESC (New York State HIgher Education Services Corp) is the agency I used for my loan. I'm thinking perhaps every state has one - I'd look for this agency on the internet and then call them and ask if there is a main government office that could direct you to the agency in your own state (if other than ny)

Also, it would help your credit rating to pay off car loan but 650 is a decent score and I think you'd have to get into the next tier of 680 for it to really make a difference. I don't know if paying off your auto loan would necessarily get you there.

Also, be leary of brokers who try to tell you that 650 is a high risk score. I'm going through that right now and i think they're full of crap and just trying to create excuses not to give me a good interest rate and to charge me points up the wazoo. We have to keep searching for the better deals. Good Luck.
