JBC sending letter to us in Florida for old paid debt in PA

I feel your pain. My husband wrote a check to Ames in Pennsylvania in 1999 for $28.61 which he bounced. However, not too long after that he was notified and he paid it off although he doesn't have his copy, even his mother remembers him paying it!

However, now four years later JBC sends him a letter at our residence in Florida quoting Florida Statutes and wanting to collect the original amount plus a $30 fee. What a hoot!!!

We pull our credit reports annually and they have always been excellent, we have no late payments, nothing and this has never been on my husband's credit! :) My guess is that if my husband hadn't paid it, Ames would have sued him long ago since they only went out of business in 2002. It's paid and we're done. They can't threaten us. Let them try!

We refuse to 1) pay a debt my husband has already honored and 2) pay these extortionists

No way.
