Don't let them scare you, that's EXACTLY what they want and what they prey on to extort money out of people. Realize the calls from 'lawyers' are MEANT specifically to scare - ooh.. big, bad lawyer can sue ! MOST of the time these 'lawyers' are just another collection agency - they may have law degrees, but their main business is scaring people into paying.

These scumbags will ignore the law and tromp all over it. Your best bet is to learn and understand YOUR rights and their limitations by reading the FDCPA. Do NOT let them intimidate you or lose sleep over them. If you have no money to pay them, its pointless to talk to them. If you haven't any non-exempt assets, there's nothing they can take from you even if they do sue.

Go the validation route - if nothing else, it will buy you some time.. and they'll rack up FDCPA violations and you can sue THEM !
