disputed item went away, now I'm getting letters from CA's!

I disputed a hospital bill that occurred in a state I've never even been too! I spoke directly with the hospital and they couldn't find me anywhere in there system and said it must be a mistake. So I disputed it with EQ and it came off. Then yesterday I get a letter from a CA saying I owe this debt and it will be put on my credit report if I don't pay in so many days. WTF is that?!?!?!?!?! There's got to be a law protecting me about this, but I can't find it anywhere. Anyone ever dealt with this?
