Sort of a similar question...I finsished school with about $12,000 in credit card debt and about $36,000 in student loan debt. I had a hard time finding a job after my grad work, and the job I had paid very little. I had an unexpected trip to the ER two weeks before my insurance kicked in and raked up another $24,000 in hospital bills. After this, in order to try and make all the payments, I got a deferment on my student loans, and consolidated my credit cards. I got them paid down to about $9,000 before the medical bills became too much for me to handle. I currently work abroad, I own nothing in the United States, and have not made a single payment on my credit cards in about two years. I have been paying the student loans again, but again, my salary (about $18,000 a year) is not high enough to pay all of my debt. I have not heard from my creditors for some time, but my parents told me that they just got a call from one of them this past week. I have no intention of living in the US for at least seven years and my credit history is already destroyed. I can't declare BC, being that I don't have residency in the States. Can I get sued over $9,000 in credit cards? Is that amount not large enough? What can they do to me?
