If it is a summons for a lawsuit, they usually do it one of several ways. They usually get a process server, a person who usually works at a lawyers office to serve you. I don't know of any case where they get a police officer to summons you since that is not the job of police officers. SOmetimes they will send it certified mail, return reciept required. Most of the time, if it is a good deal of money they are dealing with and they don't want to lose the case, they try to have you served by a process server.
