agency adding interest--can't pay with amount always adding up

I have some medical bills that I have been paying like $20 a month whenever I can. The original debt was only like $405. Even though I've paid maybe $100 the debt is already at $465. I'm getting no where if they keep adding interest? And if they keep adding interest then the account never really goes dormint for it come off my credit in 7 yrs. WHAT DO I DO?
