Sounds a bit shaky, but it may be legal. All they really have to do is leave the summons with a person 18 or older AT YOUR ADDRESS. Since your doorman knows you, and knows which unit you live in, it is probably legal service. Since strangers and non-residents are not usually allowed into a restricted access building uninvited or unescorted, it stands to reason giving it to the doorman would be acceptable.
