Can this company do this to me?

Hello,

Through a big error on my part, I accumulated debt with a certain company who then proceeded after not being able to contact me for a couple of months to bring in a collections agency to chase the debt. That's fair enough, I don't have a problem with that - it was my error.

What I am concerned about is the fact that *after* they had turned the debt over to a collections agency, they still continued to bill me for services as per usual; so what I owe is actually higher than what was turned over to the collections agency. I haven't actively been using the service, but they have left the account open and therefore attracting fees. Is this practice legal in the USA? If not, can anyone point me to the law that states otherwise? Thanks for your assistance.
