Charge offs being updated

I have several accounts that were charged off in 1997. But my credit reports continue to show 30 and 90 day late postings in all the years since including 2003. What is the most effective way of getting these updated dates removed? When the orginal charge off date reaches 7 years, will these records be dropped or will they continue from the last update seven years? Isn't this illegal?
