I have a question that might sound stupid, but I would really like to understand if any of you can help me. I had a Citibank account which was charged off recently to the tune of over $7000. I contacted Citibank to see what I could do about making payments after the fact, but they would not accept them. I was informed that once it is charged off, they cannot, by law accept payments. The account was turned over to one collection agency who harrassed me at work and left illegal messages on my answering machine. I contacted their management and the calls stopped, but it seems now the account has been sent to NCO. I received one phone call stating that it was an attorneys office and they wanted to know when I would start paying. I did not speak to them and ended the call. The thing is, if you look at court information online for various cities and states, it shows that Citibank is the party suing many individuals on the court schedules, but if they are telling me they cannot accept money for my debt why am I seeing all of theses lawsuits (some for much smaller debts than mine) listed in court? Can they sue me after they have charged the account off and will no longer accept my payments or would the lawsuit come from someone else? I'm just trying to figure out what to do from here. I live in Florida and the account was charged off in September. My last payment to the creditor was over a year ago.
