"Kelly" is again mistaken.

The term "assigned" is a legal term and can be EITHER a temporary assignment of rights or a permanent one by virtue of a purchase.

If the lawyer is fiing suit, or threatening to file suit on behalf of a collection agency, then probably the account was assigned by sale.

If this is a medical debt, it has probably been purchased OR assigned on a contingency basis from the medical billing service.
