Can a pauper be sued?

I sent the lawyer of a CA a letter stating that I live on social security disability, don't own a car, don't own a house, and have no other assets of value. That my income is under the federal poverty guidlines. In essence I am a pauper, yet the lawyer continued with the suit and won judgment against me. As the old saying goes, "Suing a pauper will get you nothing."

Would I have any recourse based on the fact that I admitted to being poor and assetless before they decided to continue with the suit?
